In this project innovatory methods, based on four approaches will be employed:
1) Tree sapling density and growth as well as light conditions will be monitored on 29 pairs of fenced versus unfenced (control) plots established in year 2000.
2) Tree saplings growth and susceptibility to browsing will be monitored on experimental plots, where 5 tree species (spruce, oak, lime, maple, and hornbeam) will be planted along a gradient of light conditions.
3) Video filming of the experimental plots allowing detailed evaluation of their utilization intensity by all ungulate species.
4) Telemetry (GPS and VHF) of red deer (the dominant species in ungulate community in BNP) to assess browsing intensity and habitat utilization in their home ranges.
We expect the following questions to be answered:
1) What are the differences in the growth rate and species composition of forest regeneration in the gradient of light and browsing intensity?
2) How susceptible are the selected tree species in the first years of growth to different browsing levels?
3) What is the forest utilization in different light and forest regeneration conditions by all coexisting species of large herbivores?
4) What is the habitat selection and home range utilization of red deer, the dominant species in the ungulate community in BNP?
